Canada Grocery Rebate September 2025: Eligibility, Payment Dates & Amounts

The Canada Grocery Rebate is meant to be a federal relief measure that helps low- and modest-income households facing the rising costs of food and rent. Managed by the CRA, it is complementary to the GST/HST credit and not a separate program altogether. This rebate was first introduced in 2023 during which period the government increased the GST/HST credit to battle inflation and continues to this day as a way to provide relief to eligible families.

Who Is Eligible For The September 2025 Rebate

You must meet several criteria set by the CRA to qualify for the Canada Grocery Rebate in September 2025:

  • For purposes of the tax law, the person must have held Canadian residency at the payment issuance.
  • Should be a person who is 19 years old or older or younger and has a spouse/common-law partner or dependent child in the household.
  • You must file an income tax return for 2024, regardless of whether income was earned for that year.
  • If you were paid the GST/HST credit in January 2025, the chances are that you will be automatically eligible for this rebate in September too.

Payment Dates: When You’ll Receive The Money

The grocery rebate payment is linked with the GST/HST credit schedule, which is quarterly in nature. The important window of payment in September 2025 is from September 19–20, 2025. Earlier in the year, it was around mid-August. It usually takes about 1-2 days for direct deposit payments to be credited into your bank account. However, if you get a cheque in the mail, it might take up to 10 days.

How Much Will You Get?

The amount depends on household size and adjusted net income. These are some approximate payment amounts for September 2025:

  • $234 (no children)
  • $387 (one child)
  • $467 (two children)

Check Your Eligibility And Payment Status

To check if you’re really eligible for the rebate, or to confirm the payment timeline, you may decide to check either through the CRA online services:

  • Log into the CRA My Account.
  • Go to “Payments” or “Benefits.”
  • You should see your rebate amount and date of payment. However, if you owe money to the CRA (perhaps for past taxes), some or all may be used to set off those debts.
